About Us
Transform Alliance Africa (TAA) is a growing pan-African alliance of locally-led organisations working to end institutional care of children and ensure every child grows up in a safe, loving family.
Who we are
Transform Alliance Africa (TAA) is a growing collective of locally-led African organisations committed to ending the institutional care of children across the continent. Founded in 2018, TAA brings together more than 20 member organisations from more than 12 countries.
We aggregate knowledge, build coalitions, and apply political pressure at national, regional, and continental levels. We work with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), the African Union, the East African Community, and national governments to advance care reform as a continental priority.
An Africa free of orphanages, where every child belongs and grows up in a safe and loving family.
Our mission is to be a catalyst that will end institutional care of children in Africa by bringing together our collective voices, knowledge, practice, and experience to strengthen families.
Why We Exist
Every child has the right to grow up in a family. This is an inalienable human right, affirmed in Article 20 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 25 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and in the UN Guidelines on the Alternative Care of Children. The African Charter is explicit: ‘every child shall be entitled to enjoy parental care and protection and shall, wherever possible, have the right to reside with his or her parents.’
Across Africa, over 80% of children who live in orphanages have at least one parent. For over a century, evidence has consistently shown that orphanages harm children’s development, deepen inequality, and represent a catastrophic misuse of resources that should reach families. The AU’s own Agenda for Children 2040 calls on member states to promote the transition from institutional to family and community-based care. TAA exists to make that transition a reality.
